Laughter Yoga is a relatively new exercise that draws from ancient roots. As long as there have been humans, there has been laughter. It is one of the most basic of human exercises and expressions and also happens to be one of the most beneficial. Yoga itself is a centuries old practice with various forms. Some forms require many types of stretches, some are based on meditation only and all of them use a variety of breathing techniques. Yoga means union and by practicing its various techniques, individuals are able to bring the body and mind into a form of union. So how does laughter fit into all of this? Laughter forces the body into some breathing techniques that cause the body and mind to unite and bring individuals fully into the present moment. These exercises force stale air out of the body and allow for greater oxygenation resulting in many health benefits, stress relief, clear thinking and an overall a sense of well-being and joy.
A WORD FROM RHONDA LEE
As a Laughter Yoga leader I have found this technique to be incredibly flexible. I literally can find a way to use it in every circumstance. I have had the honor of witnessing individuals in my stress management workshops become refreshed, seen senior populations achieve a genuine cardio-vascular workout from their chairs, lead artists to new heights of creative thinking, observed as co-workers build team skills that unify their common goals, cried as cancer patients found a moment of joy in their day, listened to the gleeful giggles of children and have even watched in complete amazement as individuals transform often looking as though they had just received a facelift in 15 minutes! I am completely convinced that this powerful tool called laughter, that we all possess, can indeed significantly alter our health on every level. Medical research now recognizes the multitude of health benefits that can be achieved from laughter and Laughter Yoga. These benefits range from boosting serotonin levels to elevating the immune system to cardio-vascular benefits. The list goes on and on!
